The general population can sometimes be harsh. They may stare, judge, make comments.  But at the end of the day as you quickly learn, there is an internal peace that comes with what you do.  A sense of fulfillment for what you've accomplished. And the adoring expressions on the faces of those whom you are working with make it all worthwhile!
Can you remember the exact moment your life was changed by someone with a developmental disability?  The fact is that after you’ve been working with adults with developmental disabilities, you change. Nobody tells you this when you’re filling out your application. Instead, you hear about the hours, the health benefits, the 401(k) plan, the programs and the strategies. Nobody tells you that if you do the job right, you’ll never be the same.  For the better.

You can't know going into the role that it can be the most amazing job you’ve ever had.  And on some days, the worst. You cannot foresee the emotional toll it can take on you. However, for most, there comes a time when you find you’re at home and most comfortable, surrounded by people with developmental disabilities and all the love that comes with that.

In a 20 page question and answer document issued jointly in November 2016, the U.S. Department of Justice and the Department of Housing and Urban Development are clarifying state and local government responsibilities under the Fair Housing Act when it comes to zoning and land use laws.
Homes where people with disabilities live should not face requirements or conditions different from those where typically-developing individuals reside, according to new federal guidance. The Fair Housing Act bars discrimination based on disability and that applies whether or not such individuals live in group home situations.  Read more here>>

There are some important personality traits that many successful ECE teachers share. Patience is near the top of the list, of course! The ability to think creatively is important as well, to implement unique and fun ways to teach.  The proven primary personal attributes that differentiate a preschool teacher from an elementary school teacher is being extremely high energy and being physically expressive.
You're reading this because you love children. But it’s tough to choose between a group of adorable toddlers and more independent elementary students. Early childhood education (ECE) focuses on the academic, social and cognitive skills that develop in children from birth through preschool.

Early childhood education
Following are the most important desired skills employers are seeking in prospective preschool teachers:

  • Child development
  • Child care
  • First aid
  • Lesson planning
  • Cleaning
  • Music
  • Psychology
  • Record keeping
  • Case management

Gailanne Reeh was founder and CEO of ARBOR Associates, Inc. and earlier, was the Commissioner of the Office for Children. She also was a leader and founder of the Massachusetts Children's Trust Fund and the Department of Mental Health Political Advisory Committee.  Today, at the direction of Steve Aldrich and Arbor's amazing team of professionals, Arbor is flourishing.  Already in 2017 Arbor has expanded to open two new office centers, one in Andover MA, and the other in Wellesley MA.  Thank you to all who give their best so Arbor Associates can be a leader in the industry!  #didyouknow
